As a bona fide Y2K style icon — look no further than the looks Joey Potter wore on Dawson's Creek — Katie Holmes knows her way around a vest, but her latest sleeveless look took the hippie-style staple into throwback territory thanks to a new matchy-matchy M.O. Yesterday, the actress and director combined Banana Republic's Italian denim vest and wide-leg trouser jean for an easy outfit made for a sunny stroll in NYC. Holmes doubled down on the throwback vibes with her accessories, which included a pair of square-toed shoes and a stack of dainty gold necklaces.
Holmes's outfit also went against a widely held fashion rule about opting for mismatched denim for a Canadian tuxedo 'fit, but her polished, easy look made a case for breaking outdated and arbitrary rules. Holmes added a cream-colored belt, breaking another rule about matching shoes and belts, and finished the toss-the-rules-out ensemble with her signature dark hair in loose waves.

Holmes is prepping to star in a revival of Our Town on Broadway, set to run at the Barrymore Theatre starting Oct. 10. She'll appear as Mrs. Webb alongside Jim Parsons and Zoey Deutch. The show first hit Broadway in 1938 became one of the most popular productions in America, and the play won a Pulitzer Prize.

Last year, Holmes spoke to Glamour about wanting to expand her career away from acting on screen into more theater work. Her stage credits include roles in All My Sons and The Wanderers.
“When we were doing Dawson’s Creek, and it was successful, I remember really wanting to grow as an actor and not just do things to capitalize on the moment,” Holmes said. “I wanted to learn from other people.”
She's also expanded her résumé with directing, including 2023's Rare Objects.
